The Cagli pipe show was two days away, one of which would be spent driving. The GPS system tried to divert us through Austria, but we were too wise for that and found our own way. Bruto and Rosaria Sordini of Don Carlos pipes live and have their workshop in Cagli, and we spent a few hours with them. I’ve always been impressed with the quality and reasonable price of Don Carlos pipes so I was particularly interested in seeing their workshop. Bruto Sordini has an energy and charisma that is difficult to describe. I couldn’t understand a word he said, but I loved hearing him speak, always with enthusiasm and profound expression. He moves quickly and surely, is creative and accurate in shaping pipes, and is confident and detail oriented in his finishing work. His wife, Rosaria, is no amateur, either. She demonstrated remarkable skill as well and is equally professional. Together they make an unbeatable team that provides the world with high-quality pipes representing, in my opinion, one of the best values available. The Cagli pipe show was held in the courtyard of an ancient building in the old part of the city, but because it was raining, the tables were gathered around the courtyard in the loggia, a portico-style structure surrounding the courtyard. There were dozens of pipemakers there whom I had never heard of before, as well as those known worldwide. Paolo Becker was doing very well and his table was always surrounded by people. He was the only one there to sell out of stock, though most did a very brisk business. Despite the rain and cold, laughter and happy conversation echoed across the courtyard all day. David and Jan looked with interest at many of the pipes, but because production numbers were so low for most of them, they were not good contenders for national distribution in the U.S. That evening everyone from the show gathered at a local restaurant for the big pipe smokers’ banquet. Food is very important in Italy. Because of the new no-smoking laws, the restaurant filled with pipe enthusiasts who seemed lost because they could not smoke—until Bruto Sordini arrived with lit pipe in mouth, moving from table to table greeting everyone. He was completely unconcerned with any pathetic smoking regulations and provided an example for everyone to follow. Gradually, pipe after pipe was lit until the entire banquet hall was filled with the aromatic haze of every variety of pipe tobacco. It was civil disobedience at its best, and we were never told to stop smoking. We were not evicted; we were tolerated and not made to feel unwelcome in the least. The food was excellent, the wine was plentiful, the fellowship was unparalleled. It was the end of a perfect excursion.

Complimenti a Bruto ed a sua moglie Rosaria.
